Wife of Alex Rosenstein [*1820]
Hannchen Cohen was born in 1826 in the small town of Neustadt-Gödens (later spelled Neustadtgödens) in Friesland on the border with Oldenburg. At the time, there was an unusually large Jewish community, unparalleled in Northern Germany, sometimes making up a quarter of the total population. Hannchen"s parents were Victor Cohen and Betty, née Mattison.
Around 1853, Hannchen married merchant Alex Rosenstein and moved with him to his hometown Hitzacker in the Wendland region (east of Lüneburg). Their children Victor, Bertha and Emilie were born there in the following years. Around 1860, the family moved to Lüneburg, where their daughter Fanny was born in 1861. Alex Rosenstein established himself as a produce merchant and soon played an important role in the Jewish community in Lüneburg.
Hannchen Rosenstein, née Cohen, died of typhus in Lüneburg in March 1865. She was buried in the town"s Jewish cemetery.
