Sally Horwitz was born in Bünde, Westphalia, in 1868 as the third child of cattle dealer Meyer Horwitz and his wife Caroline, née Meier. In 1889, he moved from Bünde to Lüneburg together with his parents and ten siblings. In 1892 he went to Bremerhaven, then did his military service and returned to Lüneburg in 1895.
Sally Horwitz was a cattle dealer, like his father and many other family members before him. In 1900 he married Else Cohnheim, who came from Gleidingen near Hildesheim. He took over his father"s business in Rotehahnstraße. Sally and Else Horwitz moved into his parents" house in Rotehahnstraße and started their own family there. In the years up to 1906, six children were born.
Sally Horwitz died in 1929 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg. His widow Else continued to live in Lüneburg until she was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944.
