Horst Brandstein was the second child of Paula Brandstein, née Parnes, and Moses Brandstein. He was born in Lüneburg in 1927, one year after his sister Jenny. His parents ran a textile business. Horst Brandstein died in Lüneburg in 1930, not yet three years old. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg.
