Erna Alexander was the third child of Rosalie Alexander, née Marcus, and her husband Samuel Alexander. She was born in Lauenburg in 1894. Her parents, who had gotten married in Lüneburg in 1891 and lived there for a short time, lived in nearby Lauenburg on the Elbe where they ran a textile business. Erna died in 1905 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg.
