Gumpel Marcus Meyer was the third child of second hand and produce dealer Benjamin Meyer and his wife Georgine, née Mendel. He was born in 1824 in Rodewald near Neustadt am Rübenberge. In 1828, he came to Lüneburg with his parents and siblings. He first became a produce dealer like his father. Around 1859, he opened his own milliners" store and settled on the main square Am Sande.
Around 1857 Gumpel Meyer married Johanne Friederike Falk, who had been born in Leese in 1832. They had four children, all of whom were born in Lüneburg and some of whom remained there.
Gumpel Meyer died in Lüneburg as early as 1867 and was buried in the town"s Jewish cemetery. His widow Johanne survived him by thirty years.Name variants: Marcus Markus
