Ernestine Horwitz was the fifth child of Bertha Horwitz, née Naumann, and Hermann Horwitz. Her father was a cattle dealer in Lüneburg. Ernestine grew up with her older siblings in the Horwitz family home at Auf dem Kauf 13.
She died far too early in November 1898, aged just four, and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg.
