Johanne Herzberg was born in Hitzacker, east of Lüneburg. in 1836. Around 1860, she married Joseph (Robert) Behrens from Lüchow, who had become a citizen of Dannenberg and worked there in the banking house "J. M. Mansfeld Witwe". The couple had four children.
In 1880, Johanne and Joseph Behrens moved from Dannenberg to Lüneburg because the Mansfeld Bank, now managed by Joseph Behrens, relocated its headquarters to Lüneburg. The family"s bank offices and living quarters were located in the prestigious house in the center of the town, Am Sande 18.
Around 1890, son Paul also came to Lüneburg. Like his father, he had become a banker and now joined "J. M. Mansfeld Witwe" in Lüneburg as a partner. He took over the business in 1891. Johanne and Joseph Behrens continued to live in the large house Am Sande. Joseph died there in 1893, his widow Johanne Behrens, née Herzberg, in 1898. Both were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg.
