Emma Recha Warburg was a daughter of Hamburg merchant Gumprecht Simon Warburg and his wife Fanny née Haarbleicher, who both belonged to important Jewish families in Hamburg. On May 20, 1855, Emma married Bernhard Behrens, a paper merchant from Lüneburg.

She moved in with Bernhard Behrens in Lüneburg. They lived in the large old family house at the corner of Markt and Große Bäckerstraße. There, their four children were born in the following years.

As adults, all four children left the small town of Lüneburg, moving to Hamburg, Berlin, Manchester and Hildesheim. It is striking that they all married into relatively well-known families of the Jewish educated middle class - probably due to their mother"s Warburg and Haarbleicher background.

In 1893, Bernhard Behrens died in Lüneburg. His widow Emma Recha Behrens, née Warburg survived him by only a few years. She died in 1896 in Karlsbad and was buried next to her husband in the Jewish cemetery in Lüneburg.
