Betty Marcus was born in June 1877 in Lüneburg, the eighth child of Samuel and Bertha Marcus, née Salomon. Two of her older siblings, Matthias and Henriette, had died at a very young age. Betty also lived to be only nine months old: she died in Lüneburg in March 1878 and was buried in the city"s Jewish cemetery.
