Bertha Marcus née Salomon came from Aerzen, near Hameln, where there was a large and lively Jewish community. Her parents were Nathan Salomon and Therese, nee Levy. Bertha was the second of seven children.
Around 1863, she married merchant Samuel Marcus from Walsrode. The couple lived first in Walsrode, then in the town of Bevensen, south of Lüneburg, and finally in Lüneburg from 1872. Samuel"s parents and his brother Magnus junior already lived there. Samuel first worked with his father and then started his own business, trading in secondhand goods and later in shoes. Bertha Marcus most certainly also worked in the store.
Bertha and Samuel Marcus had nine children, three of whom died shortly after birth. In 1879, few months after the death of her last baby, son Louis, Bertha died from tuberculosis. She was buried in Lüneburg in the Jewish cemetery.
