Samuel Marcus was the second child of Magnus and Friederike Marcus from Walsrode. He was born in 1835 in Belum/Land Hadeln. In the 1850s, he moved with his parents to Vorbrück (Walsrode). He grew up in Walsrode, surrounded by a large circle of siblings.
Samuel got married twice: first in about 1863 to Bertha Salomon from Aerzen, with whom he had nine children; then, after her death, in 1880 to Rosa Rosenbaum from Ottbergen (Höxter). Seven more children came from this marriage. The family lived first in Walsrode, then from 1869 in the village of Bevensen south of Lüneburg and finally in Lüneburg. Shortly before, Samuel"s parents and his older brother Magnus junior had already moved there.
In Lüneburg, Samuel first worked as a secondhand dealer like his father and brother, later as a merchant for clothes and shoes. Since 1875, his store, which was also the family residence, was located at Lüner Straße 5.
Samuel Marcus died in 1904 and was buried in Lüneburg"s Jewish cemetery. His widow Rosa Marcus continued to run the business at Lüner Straße 5 until about 1910, later at Lüner Straße 2.
